The Amazing Murphys

We visited the Murphy Clan in Dublin for an extraordinary evening of excellent food, plentiful drink and extraordinary good cheer. We got to know the family after son Liam stayed at our house in DC during his internship in 2011.

Liam’s parents are Ray and Sheila and they are unusually delightful people, even by Irish standards. Sheila recently retired after 37 years as an Aer Lingus flight attendant. Ray is a linguist who marvels at the ebbs and flows of the English language, best illustrated in the BBC TV program, Yes, Minister. Liam spent the last few years at the pinnacle of the British government working in the Foreign Ministry, but could not bear to be away from his beloved Dublin. He chucked the glamour of London and returned home, with a side trip for his annual pilgrimage to Mother Theresa’s home for the dying in Calcutta where he volunteers every year. Sheila joined him forming a powerful mother-son service team working on behalf of literally the poorest people in the world.

It was our first meal in Ireland and a perfect way to begin our Irish adventure.
